As you might be aware,the Union Cabinet passed the bill of 27% reservations for OBC`s in central institutions. The bill would be tabled in parliament towards the end of the current session. The matter is still pending in the Supreme Court.

The youth for equality hereby informs and request all the Youth throughout India and abroad to gear up for the battle that lies ahead.

A massive rally of was carried out at Jantar Mantar by students and doctors from AIIMS, Maulana Azad Med College, JNU,IIT Delhi, Delhi University on 22,Aug 2006.

Similar Protests are happening in all parts of the Nation with Medicos going on Mass Casual Leave Today(24 Aug,06).

So much for the OBC people crying themselves hoarse that this is for the betterment of the people.

Let us show that the fire still burns in out hearts. Let us show them our strength.Let us not waste the time and effort of all the state co-coordinators and other members, who have toiled selflessly over the past few months to carry this movement forward. Everybody knows that Government is ready to bring the OBC reservation Bill in the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament. Even though the Matter is Subjudice in Supreme Court, there is no bounding on Government to not table the Bill in the Parliament. We need to show our Strength to the Government by Non-Violent Means.

What you need to Do:-

1. Wear Black Clothes on 14th August and show your Protest. Take Pride in being part of the Protest.
2. Students, Professionals, Businessmen, vendors, pensioners, farmers and housewives should take part in the Protest by wearing Black. (At least a Black Ribbon).

How You Can Help:-

1. Don't depend on Internet Alone.
2. Paste Posters.
3. Distribute Pamphlets.
4. Distributing Pamphlets in Person is a huge task, Catch the Newspaper Vendor, Pay him Money, He will put a pamphlet each in Newspapers.
5. Stickers can be pasted on Newspapers.
6. Scroll Headlines in Local Cable TV Channels.
7. Banners in Front of Schools, Colleges and Offices.
8. Loudspeaker Announcements.
9. Put Stalls in front of your colleges, Organizations, Bus Stands and distribute Black Ribbons.
10. E Mails/Internet: Draft a common Mail and post it on all Yahoo Groups, Google Communities, and YFE Blogs etc.

No OBC Quota in R&D

The Moily report has recommended that there should be no OBC quota in institutes primarily engaged in R&D. They have also recommended that the fellowship program of the IIMs to not have the Quota.

However, it waits to be seen if the government will take up this recommendation or just do its own willy-ninny. As far as the latest news goes, the Govt is still clueless about the numbers of the OBCs in India.

The IIMs after their look at the govts proposal to increase the seats in the Institute have given the govt. a 500 crore bill and a phased implementation over 4 years. This looks like also adding a 3rd campus to IIM Ahmedabad to take care of the inflow.

And the Govt still seems to be blustering around. The much expected monsoon session has been deffered to the end of Sep/early October. Wonder why they have to defer the monsoon session and its ok, while we have to pay our taxes on time and any slip is going to be fined. Why is the govt not fined for their shoddy work ?

We had human chain followed by candle walk on necklace road on july 23rd, sunday from 6.30pm onwards.

More than 200 people participated in the event. It was fairly successful.

We started from people's plaza necklace road and marched towards secreteriat. When to procession was moving peacefully towards secreteriate police in its colonial way interevened and stopped our walk.

We paid homage to mumbai blast victims by observing 2 minutes of silence, followed by national anthem.

We are planning have more protest in coming days. Tentatively on 15th August. So stay tuned.

Dear Friends,

As you may be aware Monsoon Session of Parliament is about to being on 24th July. We believe this is going to be one of the most important session in the history of independent India.
Government will bring the bill to introduce reservation in the institutes of higher learning and excellence. What do we do? Sit and Gossip? No.

Lets tell them that you are acting in the best interest of your party not entire nation. Divide and Rule will not work this time. Lets expose their hidden motives.

As we have done before, lets protest. In democracy and civilised society that's the best way to register our unhappiness. 16 years back government used the same weapon of wait and watch.
They succeeded last time. And we have reservations. Shall we learn from our own history? We shall not make the same mistake again.

Lets also use this occassion to tell those terrorists who have bombed trains in mumbai that youth of India is united. Lets pay homage to our brotherns who died in that attack.

Those who care about facts on reservation:

Mandal commission did its study in 1978-79 today is 2006 (27 years later!)
Research Planning Team of sociologists met only once in Delhi from June 12th to 14th, 1979 to draw up a plan of studies and researches which should be undertaken by Backward Classes Commission for determining, in a scientific and objective manner the criteria for defining socially and educationally backward classes.
A Panel of Experts led by Prof.M.N. Srinivas, met in Delhi from July 16 to 20th,1979, i.e. for five days, and, a heard detailed deliberations, prepared a complete design of the survey along with a set of schedules, dummy tables, instructions, etc." So, these two Groups in a sense laid down, what the Commission could do. Now, what did the Commission actually do with it, because neither of these teams was constituted after this? This means no specialist, no sociologist was involved with this report, apart from those eight days.
Cost Indexing data used in this report is of 1891, 1931 Census data was collected and analysed with a view to getting a frame for the linkage of traditional occupations by caste. Can we really interpolate form 1891 and1931, to 1990; or does something better needs to be done? (115 and 75 year old data !)
Mandal says in his report "Only one or two States, of them furnished the necessary details. Further, several States did not choose to respond even to some simple and straight-forward questions on important policy issues"
Mandal says in his report "the views of every individual group and association were conditioned by their own class interests and the question of giving concessions to OBCs was surcharged with emotion". That means, the input that he has got from individuals and associations has been very biased by the people who presented them. He then goes on to say: "It was but natural that most of the respondents appearing before the Commission belonged to the OBC." That means, the inputs that he has got are not reliable as a cross section of society.
Only 810 villages out of over 5 lakh villages were surveyed as a sample. "Experts panel had recommended "one per cent purposive sample of villages at the district level to be able to identify a vast majority of backward classes
Mandal himself said in his report "In the end, it may be emphasized that the survey has no pretensions to being a piece of academic research. It has been conducted by the administrative machinery of the Government... All these factors obviously militate against the requirements of a technically sophisticated and academically satisfying operation." He himself has said that this operations is not scientific, is not technically sophisticated and it is not even academically satisfying.
One of the problems was that when the Commission itself wanted to go to the villages and see the realities, while the survey covered 810 villages, the Commission itself only visited 37 villages out of 500000 villages in india
Only 28 per cent of the respondents favoured caste as the sole criterion. 78 percent said that caste can be one of the criteria, but not the sole criterion. So, most of the respondents to mandal commission who were 0BCs.have said that they do not want caste as the single definer
National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) puts OBC population at 32 per cent, the National Family and Health Survey at 29.8 per cent

Do we want all these benefits to be cornered and taken away by land-holders and land lords? Why do we not exclude the people with a certain member of properties from such benefits? Do we want these benefits to go to high senior Government officers who already have got that privilege?

What objection can there be to what I am saying? In fact, every objection that I am hearing is only confirming my fear that this Government is aiming these benefits
at a particularly privileged group and not looking at the really poor.

What is the difference between a Democracy and a Dictatorship ?

One of the main ones is the Freedom of Speech.

However, the present goverment of India seems not to to think so. For them a democratic government is about curbing the rights of people. Be it the censor board, the broadcast ministry or the Department of Telecom. Rediff reports about the blogging sites of blogger ( this site is a blogger site) being blocked due to a directive from the government.

J Grewal, Spectranet's Delhi representative at the National Internet exchange of India, told this reporter that, on July 15, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had sent ISPs a list of sites to be blocked. R H Sharma, senior engineer with MTNL, said the list ran into some 22 pages.

This is atrocious move in a democratic country. Our forefathers did not fight the British and achieve freedom to have it taken away from a government caucus.

The blogs blocked also include Mumbai Help which is a blog for the help of the victims of the mumbai blasts.

Ramadoss' revenge: AIIMS chief Venugopal sacked

New Delhi:The director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr P Venugopal, was dismissed by the Government on Wednesday.

Venugopal was ousted from his post on charges of violating the code of conduct after AIIMS' governing body meeting chaired by Union Health Minister A Ramadoss passed a resolution to this effect.

As a result of which, the AIIMS docs have gone on strike.

New Delhi: Doctors and medical students supporting sacked All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director P Venugopal, on Wednesday, went on a strike to protest his removal from the post.

Within minutes of his dismissal, all services, including the emergency, in the premier institute came to a grinding halt.

"We have declared a strike. Resident doctors, students, scientists and faculty members have all gone on strike to protest the decision," said a representative of the AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association, Dr Vinod Patra.

After thirteen years in England where he received a thoroughly Western education, Sri Aurobindo returned to India on February 6, 1893, at the age of twenty.

Bankim Chatterji's Anandamath, which contained “Bande Mataram,” the hymn to the Motherland, had been published eleven years earlier. Swami Vivekananda had just come to the end of his first pilgrimage round India, and was preparing to sail for America. Day 1

Registration of all the representatives coming from 17 states across the Nation.
Meeting with Shree Shree Ravi Shankar Ji at Art of Living Center, Bangalore where Representatives from all the states shared their concern about the adamant behavior of Government. Pandit Ravi Shankar extended full support for the cause of YOUTH FOR EQUALITY and promised to bring all the Dharma Gurus on the common platform to support YOUTH FOR EQUALITY.

Day2

All the State units of YOUTH FOR EQUALITY gave a presentation on the course of events in their respective states and the protests happened in various parts of their states against the current reservation policy of Central Government.
Discussion with the Legal experts regarding the Legal battle of YOUTH FOR EQUALITY in the highest court of Justice. Mr. Vijayan and Mr. Agarwal were present there to enlighten the representatives with the legal aspects of the case.
Each state presented the Charter of Demands and long discussion happened on each and every aspect of the Charter. Finally the Charter of Demands came up with consensus among all state units.
Each state proposed the Organizational structure for YOUTH FOR EQUALITY at the National Level and a lot of discussion happened till 3:00 AM.

Day3

One Basic Structure for YOUTH FOR EQUALITY was decided by consensus of all.
Core Working Committee discussed the Roles and Responsibilities of various committees which will be formed at the National Level and the same shall be replicated for the state levels.
Renowned Author and Orator Shiv Khera gave a motivational speech at the National Coordination Committee Meet.
Spokesperson of National Commission Committee addressed the Press Conference and kick started the Second Phase of YOUTH FOR EQUALITY by announcing the CHARTER OF DEMANDS to the Press.
Vote of Thanks by the Organizers of AKHIL BHARTIYA SAMAANTA SAMMELAN 2006.

YFE Hyderabad was there @ times job fair last weekend (10-11th june) at hi-tex. It was survey cum registration drive. We took feedback from job aspirants about the current reservation proposal. Results is (out of a total of 1749) :

YFE @ Times Job Fair

Venue : HITEX Grounds, Hi-Tech City.

YFE is setting up a stall just outside the Times Job Fair in Hyderabad.

For the benefit of everyone who is not aware, Times Jobs is an annual
fair where companies and interest job seekers unite. Last year there
were more than 40000 visitors on each day at the event.

We are having a stall just outside the fair where we will take
registrations from people who want to get actively involved in the
youth for equality forum. We plan to have around 10-15 people manning
the stall. It will not only increase the visibility but also might
help us in getting some active participants. There was also a
suggestion to try and capture opinions of people who believed in
reservations.

We will have a huge banner that say "Merit or Reservation? Join Us.
www.youth4equality.org." It will also have the India map on our t-shirts and the fist symbol of YFE.

So guys, we are planning to have to two shifts for all the voluntaries
(both Saturday and Sunday).

Morning: 8 am to 1 pm.
Afternoon: 1pm to 6 pm.

4th June : We carried on the protests against reservations in Hyderabad. A large group started gathering at the Indira Park around 9AM. Most were sporting the YFE T-shirts ( which were also later sold at the site for Rs99 only!).

Although it was planned as only a sit-in protest, the fervour of the crowd knew no bounds. A lot of impromtu speeches were made including one by a 10th class girl.

It was not just a protest gathering - a social aspect of it was also there. With the help of Red Cross, a blood dontation camp was set up. At the end of the protest, almost 100 people had donated their blood. Awesome folks !! I wonder how many politicians have actually donated blood ? None you say ??

The social aspect also extended to pledging eyes. A donation box was also set up as the students chapter of YFE Hyderabad were also pledging to adopt one primary school.

Strange things happen when there is a synergy in the general public - and those who attended it today would have felt it. A class 10 student came on stage to talk about how she and her friends had started a movement to stop engineers and doctors to go abroad - but after the current govt. driven crisis, pledged to reverse it and implored people to go abroad as our own country was foresaking us (if you missed the point - it was a sarcastic talk at its best). A person who had dreamed all his life to go abroad had just got his H1 visa, and had reversed his decision - and would be staying on in India and helping out here. We salute you! Another person who had seen the students spreading the pamphlets on the weeknights had on his own gone and got maaza and pepsi bottles for the activists - all on his own. Another professional from IIT, who had been working there came back and has become a social activist, as he said without doing something on our own, we will not be able to progress. Another class 12 student living in the locality came out of his house when he got to know of the gathering and joined in.

A protest march was then staged - which was with a twist. We decided to walk - backwards. This march was symbolism of how our politicians are taking the country backwards.

We had a very low media presense. A few persons from NDTV (though I still haven't seen the updates on TV) , and GeminiTV. That's it. However, we are not worried as we have the reach of the internet now with it. So, if you can, just send this site as well as the main YFE site ( http://www.youth4equality.org ) to all your friends. Add to your email signatures, put as status messages in yahoo/msn/gtalk messengers.

What is strange is that when the youth of the country is fighting for its rights, fighting for the upliftment of the entire nation, the topmost news on all TV channels is about drug addicts - just because they are the sons of politicians. Isn't that something to ponder over ?

If you were not here this time, there is always next time. But next time , dont come up with an excuse to stay away. What are you afraid of ?

Q.Why the protest?
A. We want to tell the government that we are not sitting idle and tolerating whatever is enforced on us.We are not slaves and we have a right to chose and right to protest against what we feel is wrong. We shall do whatever it takes to make India a great country , but great nations are not build on compartmentalised society. RESERVATION IS THE PROBLEM NOT THE SOLUTION. We need to make the government realise that they just can't dictate the terms because they are in a seat of power , we have the freedom of speech and we shall voice our opinion.

OUR DEMAND : COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF EXISTING RESERVATION SYSTEM BY COMMISSION CONSISTING OF SITTING SUPREME COURT JUDGES

Setting up formal organisational structure for YFE Hyderabad

In our first attempt to setup formal structure for YFE Hyderabad we had our first meeting today evening. 10 people attended the meeting. Currently we urgently require committed volunteers who feel strongly for the cause.

Volunteers for their respective companies and colleges. W ho forward our emails, attend our agitations, inform their friends
Volunteers who can give their personal time and enegy. They will co-ordinate activities in their respective companies and colleges. Actively search for more volunteers.
Volunteers who wants to take ownership. Who are extremely committed

You are already part of us but you can be involved more depending on the commitment and time you have. Its for everyone who believes in the cause.

If you want to participate and contribute more pro-actively not only near short term (2 weeks) or short term(3 months) may be for much longer duration please contact me.

We are the Youth for Equality - Hyderabad

We are the Youth for Equality, Hyderabad chapter. This blog has been started as a means to let people know our objectives and the activities that are taking place in hyderabad.

So far, we have organized a rally in Hyderabad on 21st May, where around a thousand people had come forward to show solidarity with the medicos on strike in Delhi ( and which Times of India reported as 100 people. When asked they said they were going to post 1000, but left out the zero!). We are the people who dont agree with the vote-bank centric govt who cares only about the vote bank, and two whits about how the country progresses.

Stay tuned for more activities in Hyderabad. If you are in Hyderabad, and you dont agree with the ham handed policies of the govt, be a part of this movement.

Sub: Objection to the proposed reservation by the Ministry of HRD and demand for
review of existing reservation policy

Respected Sir,

This is to inform you that we, the youth students and professionals of Hyderabad are in
complete disagreement with the proposed decision of the Ministry of HRD to introduce
27% reservation for OBC in central institutes like IIT, IIM and AIIMS.

We held a peaceful protest march to oppose this move today 21st MAY, 2006 and have
certain demands which we want to put against the Government of India through you.

Our demands from the central government are

Total rollback of the current proposal of reservation for OBCs in the institutes of higher education.
Comprehensive review of the existing reservation policy by the committee consisting of sitting Supreme Court judges as the Mandal commission data are very old and cannot be used as of today.
Detailed survey by the Government of India regarding the status of SC/STs after almost 60 years of reservation policy.
White paper from the Government of India on how it intends to eliminate social inequalities in next 25 years with definitive action plan for the same as we believe current move of the government is an eyewash and sincere effort is needed to remove poverty and social injustice and in effect remove reservation system altogether. We earnestly believe that reservation is not the correct instrument to remove social inequality and injustice. In fact reservation system divides society on caste lines and works as instrument of reverse discrimination.
We also demand that until government puts new social justice system in place it must identify creamy layers in SC/STs and OBCs and make sure that they do not abuse the current reservation system and benefits of present system reaches the neediest section of the society.

We sincerely believe that with the position you hold you shall be able to convince the
central cabinet about the adverse effects of increased reservation quota in institutes of
national importance and put forward our demands in front of the Government of India
